What to Expect on our Museum Safaris

Depending on the tide, Combe Martin harbour beach reveals a mix of soft golden sand and sprawling rock platforms—ideal for marine explorers of all ages.

At low tide, these gentle, educational walking sessions allow families to discover crabs, mussels, anemones, barnacles and tiny fish in shallow pools. You could also spot limpets and sea-snails.

Combe Martin bay offers a space for many activities and all ages. Our seashore walking safaris are designed to be safe, relaxed, and memorable experiences for everyone.

Combe Martin beach offers a Wheeleez Sandcruiser and 'Access For All' Hippocampe beach wheelchair. A big-wheeled rollator is designed for use on sand.

The Historic Landscape of Combe Martin

This seaside village lies within the North Devon Coast National Landscape (formerly an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

It includes the Hele, Samson’s and Combe Martin Bays Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and adjoins Exmoor National Park.

Combe Martin's beaches hold fascinating clues to the area's history. Long before modern roads were built, our coves were the bustling hub for local trade and travel.

If you look up at the cliffs, you can even spot a very old silver-lead mine entrance (called an Adit), carved right into the rock face! It runs deep into the hillside.

The Combe Martin Museum itself houses geological displays, showcasing localised fossil finds and mineral specimens including silver and lead.

Visitor Safety & Access Guidelines

  • On Foot: our guided beach safaris are based directly on the sand and rocks.

  • Book a Museum Seashore Safari in advance, and meet us at the museum.

  • Accessibility: Feel free to ask us about accessibility options. The shore is regularly cleared of washed-up seaweed, making it generally easy to navigate.

  • Accessible For All: Wheelchairs are available on Combe Martin Harbour Beach.

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy footwear suitable for walking on wet, uneven rocks.
